Disable protected mode in Adobe Flash player with a script the easy way

I have created a script to disable protected mode in Adobe Flash Player for either 64 bit or 32 bit version so people don't have to go in and fiddle with operating system files as that does sometimes resolve the issue of flash player crashing. The script is automated and smart enough to let you know if you have protected mode enabled or not. It will detects if you are on a 64 bit version of windows or 32 bit version. It will detect if the mms.cfg file exists or not in the directory. The script will also tell you if you need to get Flash player installed as well.

If you need Adobe Flash Player installed on your system, simply go here: Get Adobe Flash Player . Please be sure to UNCHECK the McAfee as that is just additional BLOAT in my opinion.

Here are few more articles concerning disable protected mode in Flash player ( Adobe site article )

All you have to do is click the link below, and the script will open up in readable form in case you want to see what it does and how it does it. When you are ready just up at the top click download, and then run it. NOTE: You might have to right click and run as admin if you get any permission or access denied, i cannot resolve these issues

If this issue does not resolve your Mozilla Firefox crashing Flash Player then you can check out my other Blog for additional fixes. HERE

Please note that i can provide limited technical support for this. This particular script is self-explanatory.

NEVER INSTALL FLASH PLAYER MANUALLY AGAIN

Be sure to Check out my other post for complete uninstall, clean up of all flash files, and re-install from a script. http://adobeflashcleanup.blogspot.com/

  1. Thanks very nuch for the script. However, I think that the echo comment after the else should read: "... HAS BEEN DISABLED ..." since you just set ProtectedMode=0. Or am I missing something?

    Regards

    IF %isComplete% gtr 0 ( ECHO PROTECTED MODE IS ALREADY ON FOR 32 BIT VERSION OF FLASH
    ) else (
    echo ProtectedMode=0 >> C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash\mms.cfg
    echo PROTECTED MODE HAS BEEN ENABLED FOR 32 BIT VERSION OF FLASH
    )

    1. You can delete the file(s) :

      C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash\mms.cfg

      or

      C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash\mms.cfg

      They are not normally present when you install flashplayer

  5. Hi,

    On Windows 7 x86 I disable protected mode using your script AFTER using your other script for unistall/download/re-install flash player. Plug-in versioin installed: 16.0.0.235
    I looked into mms.cfg file and it was OK, ProtectedMode=0 line was added.
    But when I run a Facebook game that utilizes Flash Player, plug-container.exe was running, odd. And it was using CPU for 36-41%.
    Then I deleted mms.cfg file and now two flashplayerplugin instances are shown in taskmanager, odd, the other way around as it is supposed to work. But the cpu usage of one of the two instances still using CPU around 36-41% on idle.
    Duh!

  7. Looks like Firefox broke this fix, I tried it on the latest version and it does not work either as when this script was wrote. I also tried renaming the plugin container and it will not play flash content at all. I have to put a note in the top that states this. Disabling the plugin container and setting protective mode usually caused issues together. But now ... ugh .. its Mozilla who broke the disable plugin container

    I guess you are having flash player crashes as well?

    1. Well, I decided to implement your scripts due flash player crashes in the first place. Then after my above findings applying your scripts I was testing for around an hour on Facebook's games with no issues at all, just the cpu usage is still high. Guess it needs more testing time to see whether a crash appears...

  8. I am glad you found this and took the time to report and test your findings here.:)

    Out of curiosity, aside from this and the disable plugin container, I assume you are using the prefetch script ?

  9. Wow thank you so much for the FlashDisabledProtectMode.bat file. It worked! Now I can go back to Firefox as my default browser and say goodbye to the resource hog that is Chrome.
